When you think of Star Trek, you probably don’t immediately think of the Czech Republic in Central Europe (maybe Star Czech, but not Star Trek). But when it comes to Trek fan films, there are people in Prague who have taken it to a whole new level!

I first became aware of Czech Journeys at the end of 2018, when I saw a breathtakingly beautiful four-part Star Trek fan film called DIPLOMACY. What’s amazing is that these people built a 360-degree ship deck for the 24th century! While it’s not as elaborate as TNG, DS9 or Voyager, it’s still impressive….Benzite!). I had put this on my long-distance sensors to report here, but after a very busy year, I never got around to contacting them.

But I didn’t have to worry, because they contacted me in late 2019! To be exact, Jakub “Jim” HOLE contacted me. He was part of Diplomacy, but he told me not to worry about making this fan film, because he and his team have something to take Diplomacy down!

It makes me curious.

Jakub explained that a new, more action-oriented fan film called SQUADRON had already been shot on this amazing set. All the live shots were “in the can” (as they say in America) and about half of the special effects shots were already finished or in progress. But to properly complete the shooting and the rest of the post-production, money was needed, and they were planning to launch a crowdfunding campaign in early 2020. I was, of course, more than willing to support this campaign with blog posts like this one, which includes an audio interview with Jakub.

Although they did not reach their goal of $16,000, they still received almost $9,000,….the impeccable and energetic Indiegogo campaign, with almost constant promotion (trailers, behind-the-scenes videos, interviews, etc.) by Jakub and his team….. Most of them spoke very good English, even though the film itself was entirely in Czech.

The money was used to complete post-production, which included stunning CGI effects for the second half of the blazing battles in the British stronghold SAMUEL COCKINGS. The first part was first screened a week ago, on February 1, and has already garnered over 42,000 views on YouTube! Diplomacy, however, barely passes the one thousand mark after two and a half years, and the other Czech fan films made on this bridge and released in the past two years are still only thousands. So this film is something special, people!

In fact, you can see for yourself that the last part 2 is just out. Here are the two parts together (with the English subtitles, which I also helped edit)….

To celebrate this impressive release, I recorded my first video ZOOM INTERVIEW with not one, not two, but SIX people from the cast and crew of Squadron: executive producer and actor Jakub “Jim” Hola mentioned above, there was also director Teresa Junova, screenwriter Jan “Janak” Kotouch, designer and lead actor Michal Husak, production designer and editor Ondra Vodicka, and lead actress Jana Pečlová. I have never interviewed so many people at once, but the 90-minute interview was fantastic!

Hear (and see)…
