I think the audience, including producers and directors, developed a passion for actors, especially actresses, and then lost interest and moved on to the next one. There are a handful of actors who support this interest because it is interesting to see them improve in what they do. I want to be one of those actors. Long before she made a name for herself with projects such as 10 Things I Hate About You, Save the Last Dance, Bourne or Dexter, Julia O’Hara Stiles had a very successful career on the 28th. In March 1981 she made her big entrance into the world in New York City, where she was born the eldest of three children of an artist and a primary school teacher. With her mother’s interest in art, Stiles soon followed her example, as her early passion for dance spread to Shakespeare and theatre, leading her to La MaMa, where she made her Broadway stage debut at the age of 11.
Stiles spent the next four years on stage for 15 years, when she dared to play the lead role in the film. In 1996 she made her debut in the film Je t’aime, je t’aime as a friend of a young grandmother, not in the leading roles of Jude Law and Claire Danes. In 1997 she was chosen to play Harrison Ford’s antagonist in The Devil’s Own, just before Mr. Shyamalan was chosen to play Nina Bill in his thriller Wide Awakening (1998). Fortunately, Stiles had other major events coming up that year, her performance as Ellie Christianson in the film Wicked earned her the award for Best Female Role at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and praise from audiences and critics around the world.
In 1999 Stiles was about to become a star when she was dumped by Cat Stratford via the Heath Ledger in 10 Things I Hate about You. After another star production, Stiles turned around and won the MTV Movie Award for Best Revolutionary Direction and the Chicago Film Critics Association Award for Most Promising Actress with nominations for two Teen Choice Awards and the Young Star Award. I’m very grateful to be in this movie, Stiles said. It was my first major breakthrough and such an entertaining role. I have so many good memories of the shoot… People still talk about it many years later, it’s a great joy, and I’m lucky to be a part of it.
After catching a star of the night and connecting a handful of young heart attack victims in Hollywood, Stiles didn’t win critical acclaim for his performance with Freddy Prince Jr. in Down to You, but the chemistry of the two on screen was enough to win the Teen Choice Award for Teen Chemistry. She then joined Ethan Hawke in Hamlet and Josh Harnett in O and played with Sean Patrick Thomas in Save the Last Dance, which really shaped her early career. Stiles’ performance as a debutante ballerina earned her an MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss and two Teen Choice Awards for Best Actress and Best Fighting Scene, as well as an MTV Award for Best Actress.
Even amidst her rising star and numerous awards, Stiles had other interests and shocked her fans when she left the game at the beginning of the new millennium to go to Columbia University, where she graduated with an English degree. However, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood attracted her back when she took over the role of Nicky Parsons from Matt Damon in The Bourne Identity. After Stiles quickly traded the film with the academic world for a trip abroad, she clearly made the right choice when director Doug Lehman described her character. Thus, instead of dying at the end of the first film, she became a key figure in successors such as Bourne’s Superpower and Bourne’s Ultimatum.
Once again, at the height of her career, Stiles does not let her success in film monopolize her time as she appears in the theatre productions of Twelfth Night and the monologue Va****. In 2003 she appeared on Mona Lisa Smile with one of Hollywood’s most talented protagonists – Julia Roberts, Kirsten Dunst and Maggie Gyllenhaal – earning her a new Teenage Choice Award nomination. After a similar pattern of success with her performances as Paige Morgan in The Prince and I and Catherine Thorne in The Omen, Stiles played in small projects before shocking her fans in 2010 when she accepted the permanent role of Lumen Pierce in the popular television series Dexter.
I loved working on this show and I really love what they wrote for me, Stiles said of their experience. It certainly opened my eyes to the possibility of working more in television, because I was a bit afraid of that. Cable TV was just getting good at the time, so that’s what I was afraid of. Fortunately, Dexter left such an impression that Stiles returned to television almost ten years later when she agreed to take the lead on the French Riviera, but more details on the subject in no time!
After receiving Emmy Award nominations at Primetime and the Golden Globe for Dexter, Stiles continued his performance in the award-winning Silver Lining’s Playbook 2012. She has also worked on projects such as Girl Most Llikely, The Makeover, The Great Gilly Hopkins, Jason Bourne and The Drowning, but has recently returned to television as Georgina Clios on the Riviera. I didn’t have all the scripts, so it was a small leap of faith to do something that would take much longer, Stiles said about his attraction to the project. It’s different from anything I’ve seen on television lately, and I think the glamorous and lush environment of the South of France contrasts with these people doing dubious things – it seemed like the ideal environment. The producers also made it clear to me that they want the character I’m playing to start with naivety, then quickly surprise you and make you realise that you underestimate them. She was compared to Michael Corleone in The Godfather by turning around and doing bad things. I thought it would be a lot of fun to play.
With her role as the first female antihero on television, 36-year-old Stiles has certainly cut her work for her, especially now that she has put her mother on her hit list! After making the decision with Preston J. Cook in September 2017, a couple welcomed their son Strammer in October 2017. With the resumption of the second season of Riviera in November, we can’t wait to see what the future holds for Stiles as an actress, wife and mother!
