There seem to be people who are destined to be successful on television. When they perform in a long show coming to an end, they quickly take over another successful show. One of those actresses who probably didn’t get the recognition she deserves is Courtney Thorne-Smith, who worked in network television from 1992 to 2015 without turning away from work for a year. It’s an impressive course, and Thorn-Smith is far from finished.
Thorn-Smith was killed on the 8th. Born in November 1967 in San Francisco to a family of parents who had a steady job but were not in the entertainment industry. Even without the connections that could have helped him at his young age, Thorn-Smith was loyal to his profession. I’ve always wanted to be an actor, she says. I don’t remember ever wanting to be anyone else. But frankly, I didn’t think it would come to that. I thought it was too big a dream.
After playing at school and in local productions, Thorn-Smith fortunately didn’t give up on his dream and didn’t have to wait too long for success. In 1986 Thorn-Smith got his first roles, with the films Welcome to 18 and Lucas, but also a TV film and a role in the series Rapid Times. The show was based on Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and although it only lasted seven episodes, it gave Thorn-Smith a first taste of television.
Two years later she appeared in the series day after day as Christine Carlson in just over 30 episodes, and by the end of the following year she was in several series. The first major breakthrough as Thorn-Smith came in 1992, when she was filmed as Alison Parker in the hit series Mesto Melrose. Thorn-Smith played this role in over 150 episodes, but she left the series before the end in 1997.
That’s because another popular series had a call from Thorn-Smith, and she played Georgia Thomas in Ally McBeals almost 70 episodes from 1997 to 2002. At the end of her career in this series, Thorn-Smith found another successful sitcom, in which she starred and played the wife of the protagonist Cheryl in the film According to Jim. For Thorn-Smith it was an impressive series that lasted a very long time according to television standards.
Thorn-Smith will continue his hot series, which is broadcasting regularly on television, after connecting the cast of Two-and-a-half Men in 2010, Jim said. She plays Lindsay McElroy, a single mother in her seventh season, who eventually starts a relationship with Alan (as John Cryer). At some point they get serious, but in the typical two-and-a-half man way the relationship ends due to a strange misunderstanding.
But the gap didn’t last long, because after the ninth season the characters Thorn-Smith and Kryers finally found each other… …and they collapsed again. Thorn-Smith will play a character in more than 50 episodes, and it was a big part of the series after Charlie Sheen was replaced by Ashton Kutcher as lead character in 2011. At that time Alan started to pay more attention to the show, and his relationship with the character of Thorn-Smith began to play an important role.
Thanks to his success on television, Thorn-Smith has kept most of his career away from the big screen and is still on television after the release of two and a half people. After several appearances in the ABC series Fresh Off the Boat, Thorn-Smith has taken on the role of Emma Fielding, a mysterious character based on a book that has produced two TV films since early 2017.
For Thorn-Smith it was much more fun to be on television than to work on movies. I like being in the same place. I like being at home, she said about the schedule that the television allows her. I remember talking to a friend of mine, and she said Oh, I feel so bad going to the same place every day, and I said Oh, I like going to the same place to work every day. Television works for me and I never felt like going back to the movies. I didn’t feel like going back to the movies… I’m incredibly grateful I’ve had a few long episodes.
It was a long road for Thorn-Smith who wanted to get me out of acting as a teenager because she didn’t think it was going to be a career. It was when her local dramatist got a call for a screen test that helped her get her first rolls of film. Maybe that’s what I should do, she said, looking back on her early roles. (Over) 33 years later, I’m still doing it, so I guess I should have done it. As far as the next exhibition is concerned, we have to make an effort and find out which one it could be!
