It’s not always easy to leave show business after reaching the stars, but that’s exactly what country singer Barbara Mandrell did. After playing a number of hits at the height of his career, Mandrell decided to leave the group in the mid-nineties. But Mandrell has already left her mark in the world of country music and theatre, showing that she is one of the many talented artists who have achieved legendary status in her field.

Mandrell was born on Christmas morning in Houston, Texas, the son of a family of artists. His father Irby and his mother Mary Ellen were both singers in their own time, although their father took over when Mandrell and his sisters became singers. As a child Mandrell was able to play various instruments, including a guitar, which helped him to gain fame.

My life started with gospel music, she says. My mother and father had brothers who were ministers. When my father’s brother went to preach in my mother’s church, my father went with him. Both my parents were musicians. They played these two instruments and sang gospel and country music. My mother taught me to play the piano and accordion, and when I was five years old she taught me to read bass guitar and cut and play the accordion.

After countless nightclub shows and performances on stage in cities like Las Vegas, Mandrell finally released his first album with Treat Him Right in 1971. With songs like I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now) and Playing Around With Love, which sounded good in the charts, the album ended up in the top 50 of the national charts. The next few years will be a real breakthrough for Mandrell.

Among his greatest hits of the seventies were top five songs like Standing Room Only, Married, But Not to Each Other and Woman to Woman. By the end of the decade, her songs finally reached the top of the country charts and they even started enjoying some success with the general public, because she had a crossover that allowed country singers like Garth Brooks and Kenny Chesney to make it to the pop charts.

The eighties of the last century were also marked by the success of Mandrell, whose three other songs were in the top of the country music charts, while many others made it into the top 10. Their biggest success at the time was Spun Gold, released in 1983, which came fifth. The continuing success of this era has made Mandrella a country music legend.

At the height of his musical career Mandrell also performed with his pop show, which was first performed in 1980. With his sisters Mandrell organised a popular series for two years before the tensions of singing led him to reduce his workload. However, this does not mean that Mandrell’s acting career is over, as she made numerous television appearances, including some of the most popular shows of the time, such as Dr. Quinn, Doctor and Saviour. Her last performance as an actress goes back to 2000, in an episode of Walker, the Texas Ranger.

Mandrell’s career would change in the 1990s as she released several albums that were not as successful with fans as in previous decades. Between 1990 and 1997 Mandrell released five albums, none of which reached the Billboard country top 50. Among them, his latest album It Works For Me, which was released in April 1997. None of the songs she released during this period reached the charts after years of success.

However, Mandrell sang perfectly as a country singer before he decided to hang him in 1997. She was recorded at the Country Music Hall of Fame and was also invited to the Allusion of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee, home of country music. Although many singers found it difficult to get away from the music, Mandrell managed to get away from the spotlights.

I was worried about (the retreat), she said first. I was worried because I kept hearing. That’s all you ever knew. We can’t give up the audience and the applause. I appreciate what I got, moments with the most amazing people who gave me the chance in life to get away from my music. But I think, without a doubt… We prayed and prayed and prayed, and I kept wondering when and when the time would come, it would be instantaneous. It happened so fast. And God, he doesn’t have us under control badly.

Many have tried to bring Mandrell back from retirement, including some famous names in country music. But Mandrell explained that she had actually stopped playing music. With the exception of my steel guitar, which is in the Hall of Fame, and the kindness shown and carved on me by my parents, I sold everything else after I retired, Mandrell said. I was just kidding: I don’t want to be tempted! The only place I sing is in the pew with everyone else in the church.
